May 30th update

 !Hola familia!

In the following weeks we will start learning about a community in the past.  There are a few items we will be using. Please look around the house to see if you have any 

  • toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls
  • small paper plates are also welcome
This week in math we will continue to explore fractions in different ways. Today we saw how we can express fractions with hexagons, trapeziums, triangles and rhombuses. 



I social studies we are continuing to learn about the prairies through prairie art.  Last week we drew a landscape featuring grain elevators inspired by Jason Carter's art. This week we are using watercolours to complete the painting. 





In ELAL we wrote something about the author to add to our stuck stories and worked on our covers.

In Spanish we are getting our presentations ready to present to the class on how to prepare a breakfast food.

Friday May 26th update

 !Hola familias!

This week we started in-line skating. Students did really well and had heaps of fun.

Yesterday we did our walking-field trip and students had great questions as we explored our neighbourhood's green spaces.  Thank you to all the parent volunteers!

In math we started learning about fractions and have been doing a lot of hands-on activities such as dividing a sphere of clay into halves, quarters and eighths.
In ELAL we completed and shared our stuck stories.
In Social studies we are learning about the prairies and finished the week with some prairie art inspired bu Jason Carter.  Students have been sketch-noting as we learn about the physical aspects of the prairies as well as the animals that live here. Next week we will complete out prairie scene with watercolours and learn about the people who live on the prairies.

Please don't forget to return any books to the library next Tuesday.

Tuesday May 23rd update

 ¡Hola familias!

This week we start with the in-line skating. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed appropriately. Make sure students bring socks, no skirts or dresses. You can bring helmets if you want to.

  • In math this week we started learning about fractions. We identified a half, a quarter and an eight.


  • I ELAL we are finishing our stuck stories and will start to share the stories with the rest of the class.
  • In science we have finished our small crawling and flying animals and will move on to writing the diary of (pick your own bug).  
  • In social studies we are learning about the prairies.
  • In physical education we are trying to go out when we can to practice soccer skills and we will be doing in-line skating in the gym.
This Thursday wi will be going on a walking field trip. Please sign up for volunteering if you can.

Tuesday May 16th

 ¡Hola familias!

This week we will be  completing our 3D shapes and descriptions in math.  We are also sorting 3D shapes. 

In ELAL we are starting with our final copy of our stuck story. and learning about the ending -tion.

In Spanish we continue with food. Students will start working on how to prepare pizza, pancakes, french toast, and cereal.

In science we are finishing our unit on small crawling and flying animals.

In physical education we won't be going outside and will do activities indoor due to the smoke.


In-line skating starts Wednesday May 24.


Grade 2 Walking Field Trip: 25 May 2023

We will be taking our grade two classes on a walking field trip on May 25, 2023. Please see attached for more information. If you would like to volunteer on this trip, please sign-up through Sign-Up Genius. Police Clearance is required prior to the day of the field trip.

Friday May 12th update

 !Hola familias!

  • I science we finished this week with a surprise in the class. We have had a praying mantis ootheca in the classroom and we have anxiously been waiting for them to hatch. Today they hatched and we were able to watch as the baby nymphs emerged.  This is part of learning about small flying and crawling animals.


  • Students finished their 3D shapes in math. 
  • In ELAL we did some peer feedback and also shared our stories with the class.
  • I Spanish we started recording our question and answer sequences about food.
  • In physical education we have tried to go outside as much as possible and started practicing soccer skills.

May 9th update

 !Hola familias!

  • This week we continue with 3D shapes, 2-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping or borrowing and word problems in math.

  • In ELAL we continue to work on our stuck stories as well as working on word endings such as ed and ing.
  • In Spanish we are working on our question and answer sequences surrounding food.
  • In science we learned about what small flying and crawling animals are harmful and what are helpful for the environment and people. Later this week we will learn about the relationships of animals to other living and non-living things.
  • In Social studies we will explore a prairie community.
  • In physical education we are trying to go outside to move when possible.

in-line skating permission forms were sent home. Please return them signed by the end of the week. Friday will be Fancy Dress Day. Please dress fancy!

Friday May 5th update

 !Hola familias!

Student learning:
  • ELAL - students have been working on their stuck stories. Students planned their own stories by delineating characters, setting, problem, the failed attempts and the  solution. Now students are working and editing their drafts.
  • Spanish - we have been learning about food. Students are working on question answer sequences regarding food.
  • Math - we have been working on 2-digit addition with and without regrouping, 2-digit subtraction with and without borrowing, skip-counting, word problems and also the attributes of 3D shapes.
  • Social studies - we started learning about prairie communities. This has involved some hands-on construction of shapes and some group work.
  • Science - we continue to learn about small crawling and flying animals. This week we learned about the life cycle of insects and how animals defend themselves and attack.
  • Physical education - thanks to the weather, we have been able to go outside to move.
